That Where Unknown

I went to the woods
on a dank rainy day
to find an abandoned path

The path I found
grew darker as I walked
and letters were littered on the ground

The letters formed words
I could not yet read
but certain I was they were words

And the words told stories
I could not yet heed
but they hinted a story absurd

The meanings were faint
gibbous and queer
nearly but not quite there

And the further I walked
the less I was sure
yet still, I walked some Where

And still, I walked
I walked some Where
some Where I could not yet say

And still, I shall walk
to that Where unknown
and There is where I shall stay

Very Nearly There

There is a new stream
running through an old woods
that I've never stood beside
or set eyes upon
and still
I can feel the cool mist
rising off her timeworn stones
for I'm very nearly there
in my heart

The Shadows

in the shade
was cooler by far
than it should have been
and that the darkness
in the cool shade
was darker than
it had a right to be

But it was the first time
that he noticed the shadows
that trailed behind him
were not his

Walking Through a Dew-Soaked Field

I was chilled like early morning
laying down on the dew-soaked field
trying to identify
one
specific dew drop
on the hundreds on a single blade
and the millions scattered
across the small meadow
the one with
my face inside

Partly Hidden

I found a stone
in a dry creek bed
and in my hands it murmured
and she sang a song
that I felt more than heard

I couldn't understand it
at first
the melody was partly hidden
but I waited
and I listened

At first, there was just a hum
like distant monks chanting
and then a hint
of the song
tickled my fingers

and then...
then the psalm was there
a million years old
and clear
like ancient water

A Cousin to the Sycamore

When I travel by canoe, by bicycle, by crutch, by foot or by wheelchair I am part of this wide world   I am in and of and with the ear...
